Jump Starting a Business after the Holiday Slump

December 26, 2007 by elaineb · 1 Comment

It is a three month affair for buyers. It`s starts sometime in October and ends on December 24th. For retailers, it starts a whole year before.
It`s hard to make the profit after Christmas, specially when there are so many web businesses, making yours stand out maybe hard. But not impossible. Here are some tips to breathe new life into your business in the new year.

  • Give it a makeover! -A change of background or a new set of banners for a campaign ad, makes wonders to a worn out look on a site. Unless you are completely sure, an extreme makeover may set you back a few years, since your old look may have branded you.
  • Fab Newsletter that sells- Not just a way to show your items, but if you can show why are your items a good buy, you can make a sale. Explain features, benefits and why having it will improve-if that`s the case-the buyer`s life. Think of how QVC and HSN have to market their items to people. They make their items sound irresistible. They provide a laundry list of benefits, show you how to use it and make it desirable. You must own them! If you have bought anything from HSN or QVC, then you know it works.
  • Market your goods-That`s right. YOUR goods. If you are a fashionista, then write an article or two. Write on your blog about what you feel the trends are and also on your site. Showing others you know what you know, breeds trust and sales.
  • Reinvent the wheel and become a necessity- Sometimes your niche items are not no longer needed after the holidays. So, reinvent yourself to remain marketable. Sell different products, add a new line. If the money is tight, see if anyone will drop ship for you. The best example of a super entrepreneur that reinvented herself is Jennifer Lopez. She is a dancer, a singer, an actress, a fashion designer, a fragrance designer and most recently a producer in the film El Cantante, a film about the life of Hector Lavoe. She also co-owns the production company that made the movie possible. She even changed her name to JLo, a branding gimmick that worked and later changed it back. She reinvented herself and became indispensable.
  • After Christmas sale? During high school I worked at TJ Maxx for a winter season. I worked the register the day after Christmas and my thought was no one is going to buy anything chrismacy even if it has 75% off. Well, they did. Most remarkable was this lady who bought anything that was 50% and lower. Her bill was just about 600 dollars and she cheerfully paid it. Why hold on to merchandise that will sit there until the next big shopping day, if not next Christmas? If the discount is not substantial, people will not buy. Sell it. Make room. Out with the old and in with the new! Plus you will have money you did not have to buy a new line. The loss of the markdown is a tax write off, but do consult your accountant.
  • Donate an item in exchange for advertising. It`s a tax write off-depending on the price tag so consult your local accountant- and you kill two birds with one stone, purchased advertising and donated to a good cause. Can you beat that?

Finding your way back from holiday sale obscurity can be scary but totally doable. Use this steps to get yourself out there and remain profitable!

Hip N Chic Brag Book-Recording Artist The G Girlz

December 17, 2007 by elaineb · Leave a Comment

It goes without saying that it takes true talent to make it in Hollywood. Singing, dancing is hard but you have got to have charisma and star quality to really make it big.

Enter The G Girlz. If anyone`s got it, these girlz do! I have been working with them in creating their logo, myspace layout and schematics for their G Girlz Purse. They also were interested in seeing other color schemes for their logos.
They also provided a rough sketch of their purse which needed to be cleaned, reconstructed and texturized for the purposes of mass production. This involved creating a technical rendering, 3-D rendering and texturizing accomplished on Photoshop CS2.

The end results produced a very true to life, realistic rendering of a purse that is clean and makes them look professional. In some instances, it looks just like a photograph!
I had lots of fun working with them and I wish them the best!

Letter to Myself 13 Year Old Self

December 11, 2007 by elaineb · 1 Comment

Susie Mac from My Whimsy World tagged me for Letter to Myself 13 Year Old Self. I was 13 years old eighteen years ago!
The rules are…
The rules for the tag are:

1.Link back to the person who tagged you.
2.Imagine you could send a letter back in time to yourself when you were 13 years old. What would you write to yourself?
3.Tag 5 people to do this post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Elaine,
There are many things I would like to say to you. Many you will never understand until you have lived them in your own flesh. Experience is in fact what makes you better than the bullies and the supercilious maniacs you will bump into along the way.
However, it will make the experience more bearable to know this; You are, not what people say about you, but who you believe you are. Unless they have lived your life and slept on your bed they have nothing to talk about. Adulthood is coming sooner than it should for you. Enjoy your childhood.
There are people who will use you for what they can and talk about you behind your back. It stings. However even fakers get their day. What comes around goes around only if it is deserved, and any evil ever wished, only comes back to the wisher. Karma is delivered by the universe not humans. Remember that when you get divorced or when you are betrayed.
Love and love deeply. Even mistakes have something you can learn from. You will marry and he will break your heart. In return you will get 4 perfect boys. They are worth the burn and pain of a lost love. The broken heart can be mended. He is not going to be a good father but you will meet someone else. He is perfect in every way but will break your heart again. Immaturity is what you learned to recognize here.
Then when you least expected it, the one will come. Life has a way of giving you second chances. You must choose what chance is worth retaking. Be brave and enjoy life.
XOXO,
Elaine
A December Shopping Experience
December 11, 2007 by elaineb · Leave a Comment
As I roam the isles, people gather and swarm the items on them. I zig zag around them to get to my desired item, only to find a lady who will not move as she is guarding the item or she is afraid they will run out. I maneuver around her trying to reach it and she looks at me like she is a troll and I need to pay her a toll to get it!
After a few dirty looks, old west style, and my self-entitlement to the item feeding my ego, because I have more kids that she has, I grab it and move to my next isle. The store gets busier and busier as the morning turns it to early afternoon.
No one is nice or wishes you well. There is pushing and desperation at the checkout counter. People gather to talk in the middle of the isles like they are the only ones there, crying children beg mothers, to no avail. Everyone left their manners at home or took a day off from using them.
I started to wish I could do this online.
The worst part is, I was grocery shopping! I rather go hungry than to do that again!
