Life gives you a head fake

July 25, 2008 by elaineb · 4 Comments

As we make plans to head out for the funeral, I have been waxing philosophically about the WHY of everything. Not the meaning-I feel I get that. I once asked a teacher why is the sky blue. I didn`t like her answer. She told my mother I was giving her a hard time because she didn`t Read more

Love Beyond Reason

July 22, 2008 by elaineb · 3 Comments

I once heard a saying, “I wish I were as awesome as my dog thinks I am.” The unconditional love of a pet is uncanny and not surprisingly, people choose animal companions over humans. Your pet will not accuse you of gossiping about them, cheating or being a rotten friend. You are always Read more

Do what makes you happy

July 18, 2008 by elaineb · 2 Comments

With all that can possibly mount on your life, sometimes is easy to lose sight of why you are doing things in the first place. Even my writing has taken a new spin, to something resembling more like “mental cheetos” than the deeper, more thought provoking posts that had brought me so much joy. Read more

Drawing Classes Can Enhance your Problem Solving Skills

May 1, 2008 by elaineb · Leave a Comment

Thinking outside the figurative box can be excruciating, for those who aren`t even aware there was a box. I remember when I was taking my nursing courses, I had a tutor that caught on to the fact that I needed visuals, so he broke down my algebraic problems into visual stories that I could relate and resolve. He would explain that the brackets were like baskets and the numbers like apples. You have to add up what is in the basket first, then pick up what is out side the basket. Now what happens when the opposite is true?

Those who are analytical and rely on data given, have more of a problem. Tunnel vision sets in and the box is just what falls on your head. That eye outside the box is what us art geeks rely on. We go by feel, rather than a factual maps, and render in the same quality. Being articulate vs. analytical can have great applications in the corporate world. In teams, we are the ones people run to with office boo boos to fix and repair the disaster others make. We are creative team leaders capable of handling the masses and seeing beyond the façade that analytical types put up.

Learn to drawThe NY Times along with many other publications in the past month are documenting how Fortune 500 companies are benefiting from having their employees take drawing classes. I couldn`t agree more. Learning how to draw helps develop a detailed eye and how to approach the same scenery in three different mediums. Some artist will even claim that a particular subject will “tell” them how to draw them. Using your intuition can be a great tool not just in art, but when you are signing that million dollar contract. The abstract thinking and problem solving skills may be the sugar you need to sweeten your corporate coffee. It may just make your climb to the corporate ladder shorter.
